Jackson, Mississippi — Nov. 19, 2015 — Governor Phil Bryant, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves and officials from Nissan gathered today at the company’s vehicle assembly plant in Canton, Miss., to launch the newly redesigned 2016 Nissan Titan XD pickup truck. The Nissan Titan has been in production since 2004 and assembled at the Canton facility since that time. The launch of the 2016 Titan, which now offers a diesel model, marks a major body style redesign to the full-size pickup.
“When Nissan opened the doors on its assembly plant in 2003 in Canton, it thrust Mississippi into the global spotlight. Our state’s automotive industry has grown exponentially since that time and shows no signs of slowing down,” Governor Bryant said. “The launch of the 2016 Nissan Titan once again has the world’s eyes on our state and Nissan Canton’s hard-working employees who take pride in a job well done. I congratulate the entire Nissan team on yet another exciting milestone at the Canton facility.”
“Launching the new Titan in Canton is a testament to the quality work by Nissan’s employees there,”Lieutenant Governor Reeves said. “In Mississippi, elected leaders are working to create an environment that supports innovation in the private sector and prepare a workforce ready for the jobs of tomorrow. I appreciate Nissan’s commitment to Mississippi and congratulate their team on today’s announcement.”
“Mississippi has been an outstanding partner for Nissan from the earliest planning days of our Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant – a relationship that has deepened as the facility has grown into a true global manufacturing center,” said José Muñoz, executive vice president, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd and chairman, Nissan North America, Inc. “We’re proud to have the latest generation of Nissan Titan, the all-new 2016 Nissan TITAN XD, wear the ‘Made in Mississippi’ label, just like the original.”
The 2016 Titan XD made its debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, and will go on sale in the U.S. and Canada beginning in late 2015. The new body style positions the truck between the traditional heavy-duty and light-duty segments.
“The rollout of the 2016 Nissan Titan is a strong testament to Nissan’s leading innovation coupled with the quality workmanship of the Nissan Canton team,” said MDA Executive Director Glenn McCullough, Jr. “Nissan is a valued business partner to the state of Mississippi, providing thousands of Mississippians with exceptional career opportunities. All of us at MDA congratulate the Nissan Canton team on this exciting occasion.”
Nissan employs more than 6,000 team members at its Canton location. The company first announced plans to construct the manufacturing plant in 2000, and it began production in 2003. Since that time, employees at the facility have built more than 3 million vehicles. In addition to the Titan, the Canton plant assembles the award-winning Altima, Armada full-size SUV, Murano crossover SUV, Frontier pickup truck and NV cargo and passenger vans.
