Mississippi Receives Top Award
Jackson, Mississippi — January 5 , 2017 — Mississippi has been awarded Business Facilities’ 2016 Economic Development Deal of the Year, winning the publication’s Gold Award for successfully recruiting Continental Tire’s commercial vehicle tire manufacturing plant to Hinds County.
“To be chosen as the top recipient of Business Facilities’ 2016 Economic Development Deal of the Year national competition is a great honor for the state, the Mississippi Development Authority, Hinds County and the numerous individuals who worked tirelessly to bring Continental to Hinds County,” said Governor Phil Bryant. “This award confirms the state’s position as one of the top destinations for business and is something in which all Mississippians should take pride. I appreciate the team at Business Facilities for recognizing our efforts with this top honor.”
Continental Tire announced in February 2016 it will locate in Mississippi, a $1.45 billion investment creating 2,500 jobs over the next decade. In addition, the project is estimated to create 2,740 indirect and more than 1,000 induced jobs over the next decade, bringing an anticipated economic impact of more than $1.3 billion to the Greater Jackson region.
“Nissan’s commitment to Mississippi helped draw a number of prime players to the area, including Toyota, Yokohama, PACCAR and Airbus Helicopters,” Business Facilities Editor in Chief Jack Rogers said. “With industry giants like Continental lining up behind the state’s already impressive vehicle assembly facilities, Mississippi is accelerating into the top tier of U.S. auto industry manufacturing hubs.
“The Magnolia State had a banner year — and we fully expect that its dynamic and well-executed growth strategy will produce even greater success in 2017.”
“Being recognized by Business Facilities with the magazine’s 2016 Gold Award for the Continental plant is evidence of Mississippi’s leadership at all levels working together as one team to bring great global companies to the state,” said MDA Executive Director Glenn McCullough, Jr. “We congratulate Governor Bryant, Lt. Gov. Reeves, Speaker Gunn and the entire Mississippi Legislature on this award. Their support of this project is creating stronger communities and improving the quality of life for Mississippians by providing thousands of new career opportunities for generations to come.”
Site preparation is underway at Continental’s Hinds County location off I-20 West near Clinton. Construction of the multi-million-square-foot facility is slated to begin in January 2018 with production beginning in late 2019.
