Riverside Housing Community Opens in D’Iberville

Jackson, Miss, (December 10, 2013) – Representatives from the Mississippi Development Authority, Gulf Coast Renaissance Corporation and local leaders cut the ribbon today on Riverside, a $15 million senior independent living community located in D’Iberville. Riverside, a waterfront development, provides affordable living to qualified adults aged 55 and older whose income is 120 percent or lower than the average median income.
MDA provided $10.5 million in Katrina – CDBG funds to assist with the project, helping meet the need for affordable senior housing along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The funding was provided through the $5.4 billion federal appropriation for Hurricane Katrina recovery. After Hurricane Katrina, Mississippi’s recovery plan focused on three priorities: 1) recovering housing stock; 2) restoring the economy; 3) rebuilding and strengthening public infrastructure. Riverside is an important piece of the state’s housing recovery strategy.
“Access to affordable housing on the Mississippi Coast has been a major focus of MDA’s Katrina recovery efforts, and the Renaissance Corporation has been a valuable partner through its creation and execution of many needed programs,” said MDA Executive Director Brent Christensen. “This development provides quality affordable housing for our seniors and demonstrates the state’s continued commitment to housing as we work towards a full recovery from the storm. MDA is proud to have provided assistance for this project.”
“Renaissance Corp. was created six years ago with the mission to bridge the gap in affordable housing for South Mississippi, so the opportunity to partner with the Mississippi Development Authority and the city of D ’Iberville to bring Riverside to fruition was truly an extension of our organization’s founding mission to bridge the gap in affordable housing in South Mississippi,” said Kimberly LaRosa, president and CEO of Gulf Coast Renaissance Corp.
“And this community shows what affordable housing can be, particularly when you mix private and public funds: It’s a safe, extremely attractive development that offers incredible features and amenities to its residents. And it is designed to be an asset to the Gulf Coast. It is definitely a viable investment for Mississippi that also happens to offer a sustainable solution for senior housing.”
Riverside offers 117 apartment homes, and more than half of the units have a water view. The 87 one-bedroom apartments are 696 square feet, and the 30 two-bedroom, two-bath apartments are 1,002 square feet.  Architectural features include nine-foot ceilings, walk-in closets and exterior balconies. Design appointments include granite countertops, two-inch blinds, ceramic tile in the bathrooms and energy-efficient appliances. Storage units and covered parking are also available.
Amenities at the development include a salt-water pool, outdoor grills, a walking path that leads to the river and a fishing dock. The five-level development also offers two elevators for easy accessibility and a large community room for numerous planned group activities.
