Encouraging Investment and Economic Growth in Targeted Communities

The State of Mississippi has 878 total census tracts. Following the passage by Congress of the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill, the state of Mississippi has launched a new effort to identify 101 eligible low-income census tracts—25% of the state’s 404 eligible tracts—to submit to the U.S. Department of the Treasury for designation as Opportunity Zones (OZs). The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) is requesting public input on potential locations that meet the criteria for consideration.

In 2018, MDA led a similar process that resulted in the current map of Mississippi OZs. This year, MDA will once again coordinate the effort and will update this page as new information becomes available.

Beginning July 1, each state’s governor will have 90 days to nominate up to 25% of the state’s eligible low-income census tracts for the next round of OZ designations. These new designations will take effect January 1, 2027, and will remain in place for 10 years. Governor Tate Reeves has designated MDA to manage the state’s nomination process and provide recommendations on which tracts should be submitted to the U.S. Department of the Treasury for final approval.
