Department of Environmental Quality Lake Guidance

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) was asked to develop a guidance document which addresses regulatory issues when constructing lakes as a part of residential development. The document is intended as general guidance and should not be considered as all encompassing. Regulations are subject to change over time so DEQ chose to use the term "draft" for this document.

The Asset Development Division of MDA is encouraging the development of lake centered residential developments in Mississippi. Our research shows these types of developments, when constructed within the existing regulatory and best engineering practices, are long term positive economic engines for the public good. The positive impact of these developments do have a significant effect on the counties where they presently exist and will do the same in future locations. These positive impacts will be especially seen in Mississippi's rural counties. The long term balancing of environmental, economic, and social benefits associated with lakes developments is the major goal of this MDA program.
